What is DominGO! Hartford?

DominGO! gives residents and visitors the opportunity to use our streets in a new way by temporarily transforming them into car-free public spaces. People can visit our City’s restaurants, shops, and murals in healthy, active ways, creating physical and mental health benefits for all ages and abilities. These events will connect our communities and encourage everyone to get active, get outside, and get moving!

What are open streets?

History & Inspiration

Open streets transform streets into public spaces. They started in Bogotá, Colombia in the 1970s during a combined obesity/public health epidemic and the gas crisis. The idea was to create temporary recreation paths - "ciclovias" - on city streets. They started as roughly 10 km one Sunday per month, and have now grown to every Sunday and over 150 km, in cities ranging from Bogotá to Mexico City to Guadalajara.

In the last 10-15 years, cities in the US have started embracing the Open Streets model, from big cities like New York and Los Angeles to small places like Cambridge, MA and Ft. Collins, Co.
